Well obviously b/c I own a gun I'm going to go shoot some people. With all due respect, it's like I'm talking to a child. That's why I ask your age.

I own and use guns but I dont think people need automatic rifles or flame throwers or bazookas.

I also dont think guns for protection make much sense. I've never known anyone that actually shot a burglar or a mugger. I also think anyone that keeps a loaded gun in the house is a fool.

So if you like to shoot them or hunt that's fine with me. But I dont really think you're gonna roll outta bed and shoot some guy in the middle of the night.

I think it should be ok to keep a loaded gun in the house, so long as it's locked in a gun cabinet and not laying around the house, hiding out under your pillow or in a bed-side drawer.

No issue keeping a loaded gun in the house but if you have kids, or kids around, there should be some protection like a trigger lock.

Yeah, did you listen to the 911 call? What did you think? I guess that poor women should have just agreed to let herself be strangled to death for the greater societal good. I think it's helpful to look at specific examples like this to realize that gun ownership is really a basic human right. The most important human right is of course the right to life and by extension the right to self defense. In a modern society the item most logically chosen for self defense is a firearm because it's of the same level of force and capability as that which the bad guy is likely to possess.

I never said it didn't happen. I said that I never knew anyone that shot a mugger/burglar.
If you wanna keep a loaded gun in your house at the ready go ahead. But I think you're more likely to shoot yourself or someone else accidently than to shoot a robber.

I agree with the entire post except the last part. I don't think we should keep guns 'because' the bad guy is likely to possess one, but rather, it's the current maximum defense mechanism I can & want to operate. If the bad guy walks in with an uzi, & I have a 9mm, I'm in a tricky spot, but at least I've got something. if the robber walks in unarmed and i've got a 9mm pointed at him, I'm more likely to deter him without a shot being fired. If I'm unarmed how do I defend my family?

My point about level of force was simply that I believe it's immoral and a violation of human rights to not allow an individual to protect themselves. In today's world that means a firearm in tomorrows world it could mean something else.

Look at that overbearing a-hole Thomas Jefferson! Can you believe his sense of entitlement! He makes all these wild claims about having god given natural rights and he doesn't even site one government study, opinion poll, or provide any statistics to back up his claims. It's like he just expects to have a certain set of rights handed to him no matter what anyone else thinks!

there are loaded guns in almost every common room in my house, as well as my bedroom. my children are both very thoroughly educated in the safe and effective use of firearms, as is my wife. foolish logan? hardly. i'm away alot. wherever i am i sleep pretty good knowing that they are heavily armed and completely capable of protecting themselves and each other. i took the curious mystery out of guns when the kids were very young. they see them as a tool now and both of them are confident shooters. they were taught target identification and that if a stranger comes into our home they're not coming in to chat. To shoot them immediately and keep shooting until there is no longer a threat.

i personally carry a handgun every day unless i fly or leave the state of texas (my concealed carry permit is good only in texas). If i have to cross the border into mexico, which i only do by car a couple of times a year, i pick up a handgun there from a friend of mine and return it on my way home. the mexican border has become a very dangerous place.

this all seems so second nature to me, i'm a little surprised at the reactions i've read here. i guess we're a diverse bunch.

it IS a tool. Like a:

knife
screwdriver
hammer
car
rock

etc. & they all have to be used in an appreciable manner for what is needed. no one is scared of those other tools for the simple reason they've learned HOW to USE them.
